Checklist graphic of five places to check when a refrigerator ice maker leaks water

Why is my ice maker leaking water?

An ice maker leaks when water gets past the fill tube, the ice mold or the supply line. The 5 most common causes are a frozen or cracked fill tube, a water inlet valve that will not close, low water pressure from a clogged filter, a fridge that is not level, and a freezer that runs too warm so ice melts in the bin.

If the leak keeps coming back, our refrigerator repair Mountain View technicians fix built-in and freezer ice makers on Sub-Zero, GE, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Samsung and LG fridges across Mountain View.

This guide is for an ice maker that leaks. If it makes no ice at all, read our guide to an ice maker not making ice. If water pools inside the fresh food side, see refrigerator leaking water.

Where is the water coming from?

Finding the spot saves time. Pull the bin, dry everything with a towel, then check again in a few hours.

  • Ice sheet on the freezer shelf. Water is spilling from the ice mold or the fill tube. Think level, fill tube or inlet valve.
  • Ice chunks stuck together in the bin. Ice is melting and refreezing. Think freezer temperature or door seal.
  • Puddle on the floor behind the fridge. Think supply line, fittings or the inlet valve at the back.
  • Puddle in front, under the doors. It can be the ice maker, but also a blocked defrost drain.

What are the 5 most common causes?

1. Frozen or cracked fill tube

The fill tube carries water from the back of the fridge into the ice mold. If it freezes, the next fill backs up and overflows. Many fridges have a small heater on the tube. When it fails, the tube freezes again and again.

2. Water inlet valve not closing

The inlet valve opens for a few seconds to fill the mold. A worn valve keeps dripping after it closes. The mold overfills and water runs over the edge. In Mountain View, hard water can leave scale that stops the valve from sealing.

3. Low water pressure

Most inlet valves need at least 20 to 40 psi to seal well. A clogged water filter, a kinked line or a partly closed shutoff can drop the pressure. Change the filter if it is more than six months old.

4. Fridge not level

If the fridge tilts forward or to one side, water in the ice mold spills before it freezes. Put a level on the freezer shelf. Adjust the front feet so the fridge sits level side to side and leans back just a little.

5. Freezer too warm

The freezer should be at 0°F. If it runs warmer, ice melts in the bin and the water drips down or freezes into clumps. A weak door seal, a blocked vent or a cooling problem can cause this.

What can you check safely yourself?

  1. Turn off the ice maker with its switch or the control panel, so it stops filling.
  2. Thaw the fill tube. A hair dryer on low, held a few inches away, will melt a small ice plug. Do not use a knife.
  3. Check the level of the fridge and adjust the feet.
  4. Change the water filter if it is old, then run a few glasses of water through the dispenser.
  5. Check the supply line behind the fridge for drips, kinks or a loose nut. Turn off the shutoff if it is wet.

When should you call a technician?

Call if the fill tube freezes again after you thaw it, if the inlet valve keeps dripping, if water reaches the floor and the cabinets, or if the freezer will not hold 0°F. These point to a failed heater, valve or cooling part. Most ice maker repairs in Mountain View cost about $150 to $400.

A small drip under a fridge can soak into wood floors and the subfloor without being seen. If you find water on the floor, shut the supply valve until the repair is done.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ice maker leaking water into the freezer?

The most common causes are a frozen or cracked fill tube, a water inlet valve that does not close all the way, or a fridge that is not level. Water spills from the ice mold and freezes on the shelf or the bin.

Why is there water under my fridge from the ice maker?

Look at the water line behind the fridge first. A loose fitting, a cracked plastic line or a leaking inlet valve at the back of the fridge often drips onto the floor.

Can low water pressure make an ice maker leak?

Yes. Weak pressure can keep the inlet valve from sealing fully, so it drips into the fill tube. A clogged water filter is a common cause of low pressure.

How much does ice maker repair cost in Mountain View?

Most ice maker repairs in Mountain View cost about $150 to $400 with parts and labor. A new inlet valve or fill tube heater is usually in that range. You get the price before work starts.
