An ice maker usually stops because the water supply is blocked, the freezer is not cold enough, the ice maker is switched off, or a part has failed. The most common failed parts are the water inlet valve, the ice maker assembly, and a frozen fill tube.
Most of these checks take less than 10 minutes. Start with the simple ones before you assume a part is broken.
Filters trap sediment and minerals. When they clog, the ice maker gets too little water and makes small cubes or none at all. Use a filter made for your model. NSF's water filter FAQ advises changing filters on the schedule the manufacturer gives.
The fill tube carries water into the ice mold. If water pressure is low or the freezer is very cold, water can freeze inside the tube and block it. A technician can thaw it and find out why it froze.
This valve opens to let water into the ice maker and dispenser. If it fails, neither gets water. It is one of the most common ice maker repairs.
The assembly has a small motor, a heater that releases the cubes, and a control. If the freezer is cold and water reaches it, but no ice is made, the assembly may need replacing.
Ice makers need a minimum water pressure to fill properly. If other taps in the house are weak, the pressure may be the problem, not the fridge.
Most Mountain View homes get soft water, so heavy mineral buildup is less common than in many areas. Homes on the harder Valley Water supply may see more scale in valves and filters over time.
The City explains where your water comes from and how hard it is on its water FAQ page.

Most refrigerator ice makers need about 24 hours after installation or a reset to make the first full batch. It can take up to three days to fill the bin.
Small or hollow cubes usually mean low water flow. A clogged water filter, low house water pressure, or a partly frozen fill tube are the most common causes.
Usually, yes. Water inlet valves, fill tubes, and ice maker assemblies are common, affordable repairs, especially compared with replacing a refrigerator.
