Why is my washer leaking water?

The most common causes are a loose or cracked fill hose, a torn door seal on a front-loader, a clogged or cracked drain pump, a loose drain hose, too much detergent, a cracked dispenser drawer, or a worn tub seal. When the leak shows up, during fill, wash or drain, is the best clue to which part is at fault.

Turn off the water valves behind the washer and unplug it before you look closely. Water and power do not mix. Dry the floor so you can see where new water appears.

What are the 7 most common causes?

1. Fill hoses

Rubber fill hoses get hard and crack with age. The rubber washers inside each hose end can also wear out. Look for drips at the wall valves and at the back of the washer.

2. Door seal (front-loaders)

The rubber boot around the door can tear or collect lint and hair. Socks and coins can also get caught in the folds and cut it. A leak at the front, near the bottom of the door, often means the seal.

3. Drain pump

The pump pushes water out. A crack in its housing, or a loose filter cap on front-loaders, can leak during the drain and spin.

4. Drain hose

The hose that carries water to the standpipe can slip out, crack or clog. If the standpipe backs up, water spills out at the top.

5. Too much detergent

Extra suds can overflow the tub and leak out the door or the dispenser. Use HE detergent in HE washers, and only the amount the label suggests.

6. Dispenser drawer

A clogged or cracked dispenser can spill water out the front during the fill. Clean out soap and softener buildup.

7. Tub seal or inner hoses

Inside the cabinet, hoses connect the tub, pump and valve. A worn tub seal or cracked inner hose leaks under the washer. This needs a technician to open the cabinet.

How can you tell where the leak is?

  • Leaks during fill point to hoses, the inlet valve or the dispenser.
  • Leaks during the wash point to the door seal, too many suds or the tub.
  • Leaks during drain or spin point to the pump, the drain hose or the standpipe.
  • Leaks when the washer is off point to the fill hoses or the inlet valve.
  • Put dry paper towels under each corner to see where drips land.
